Dyneema vs Silnylon After Many Wet Norwegian Trips – Which One I Actually Use Now

One of the most common questions I get from readers is whether it’s worth investing in Dyneema (DCF) or if Silnylon is still good enough. After using both materials on numerous trips in Norway — including many rainy, windy, and rough conditions — I’ve formed a clearer opinion.

The Basics

Silnylon is a silicone-coated nylon fabric. It’s been the standard for ultralight tarps and tents for many years. It’s relatively affordable, stretches a bit when wet, and is widely available.

Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF) is a laminated material made with Dyneema fibers. It’s significantly stronger for its weight, has almost zero stretch, and is completely waterproof without needing seam sealing in most cases.

Weight Difference

This is where Dyneema shines. A typical silnylon tarp (1.1 oz/yd²) will often weigh 30–50% more than a comparable Dyneema version (0.5–0.8 oz/yd²). On a solo tarp this can mean a difference of 150–300 grams — which is noticeable when you’re carrying everything on your back for several days.

Performance in Norwegian Conditions

Norway is known for wet and unpredictable weather, and this is where the two materials behave very differently:

  • Waterproofness: Both are excellent when new. However, silnylon can start to leak slightly at the seams after heavy, prolonged rain if not properly sealed. Dyneema stays dry longer and rarely needs seam sealing.
  • Stretch and Sag: Silnylon stretches noticeably when wet. This means your tarp can lose tension overnight in rain, which leads to puddles forming or the tarp touching your gear. Dyneema barely stretches at all, so the pitch stays tight.
  • Durability: Dyneema is much more resistant to abrasion from rocks, branches, and rough ground. Silnylon is more prone to punctures and wear over time, especially on rocky Norwegian terrain.
  • Packability and Noise: Dyneema packs down smaller and is quieter in the wind. Silnylon can be quite noisy during stormy nights.

Price Reality

This is the biggest downside of Dyneema. A good Dyneema tarp often costs 2–3 times more than a similar silnylon one. For many hikers, especially those just getting into ultralight, silnylon offers much better value.

Which One Do I Actually Use?

After several seasons of testing both, here’s my current approach:

  • For most 3-season trips in Norway I now prefer Dyneema. The weight savings, stability in wind and rain, and long-term durability make it worth the extra cost for me.
  • For shorter trips or when budget matters I still happily use silnylon. A well-made silnylon tarp with good seam sealing is more than capable for the majority of Norwegian summer and autumn conditions.
  • Hybrid approach: Some hikers use a Dyneema main body with silnylon doors or groundsheet to balance cost and performance.

Final Verdict

If you hike a lot, go on longer trips, or simply hate adjusting a sagging tarp in the rain — Dyneema is worth the investment.

If you’re just starting out, want to test ultralight without spending too much, or do mostly shorter trips — good quality silnylon is still an excellent choice and will serve you well for years.

The most important thing isn’t choosing the “perfect” material. It’s learning how to pitch your shelter properly and understanding the conditions you’ll actually face.
