R-value measures a pad’s resistance to conductive heat loss into the ground — nothing more. It has nothing to do with air temperature, wind, or humidity; that’s your quilt’s and clothing’s job. A pad with a high R-value can still leave you cold on a windy, 40°F night if your top insulation is thin, and a warm bag over a cold pad will never feel warm, no matter what the tag promises. Treat your sleep system as two separate problems: the ground (pad) and the air (bag or quilt), and solve both.

The general seasonal brackets that most manufacturers and guides converge on:

  • R 1–2: Warm-weather, summer-only use with little risk of frost.
  • R 3–4: The three-season sweet spot — spring through fall, including nights that dip near or just below freezing.
  • R 5–6: Snow on the ground, sustained sub-freezing nights.
