I learned the difference between a good tarp pitch and a bad one on a ridge above treeline in the mountains in Norway (Rondane), when a squall I’d been ignoring on the radar finally showed up at 9 p.m. My A-frame held fine, but I’d left one corner too loose, and by midnight that corner was flapping like a loose sail and misting the foot of my quilt. The tarp itself was never the problem. My pitch was. Since then I’ve spent a lot of nights experimenting with different configurations, and it turns out most of what separates a bombproof tarp camp from a miserable one has nothing to do with which tarp you bought and everything to do with how you set it up.
If you already own a flat tarp, or you’re deciding whether to leave the tent at home for your next trip, this is the rundown I wish someone had given me: which pitches actually work, when to use each one, and how to think about fabric choice once you understand what the shape is doing for you.
Why Your Pitch Matters More Than Your Tarp
A tent is a fixed shape. A flat tarp is a piece of fabric with tie-out points, and the shape you build with it determines everything: how much wind it sheds, how much floor space you get, how exposed you are to blowing rain, and how fast you can get it up when your hands are cold. The same 8×10 tarp can be a cramped, bombproof bunker or a spacious, breezy lean-to depending entirely on how you stake it out. That flexibility is the whole appeal of tarp camping, and it’s also why so many people try a tarp once, pitch it badly, and go back to a tent.
The good news is that you really only need to know three or four configurations well. Here’s how I’d rank them by how often they actually get used on trail.
The A-Frame: Your Default Pitch
The A-frame is the classic ridgeline pitch, and it’s the one to learn first. Run a ridgeline between two trees (or a front-and-back trekking pole setup if you’re above treeline), drape the tarp over it, and stake out all four corners plus the two side pull-outs if your tarp has them.
- Best for: mixed 3-season conditions where you want real protection but also want to see out both ends.
- Weak point: the open ends. In a driving, direction-shifting storm, wind can find its way in from either side.
- Setup time: fast once you’ve done it a few times, especially with a ridgeline that has pre-tied prusik loops so you’re not re-tensioning knots in the dark.
This is the pitch I default to for anything that isn’t forecast to be genuinely nasty, mostly because it gives you the most usable floor space and airflow of any of the configurations here, which matters a lot on humid nights when condensation is your real enemy, not rain.
The Pyramid (Mid) Pitch: Storm-Ready Coverage
Pull all four (or more) corners of the tarp down around a single center pole and you get a pyramid, sometimes called a “mid.” This is the shape to reach for when the forecast turns ugly, above treeline, or anywhere you might not find two conveniently spaced trees.
Trekking Pole or Dedicated Pole?
Most pyramid tarps are designed to pitch off a single trekking pole set to the shelter’s specified height, which is one of the underrated reasons ultralight hikers carry poles in the first place. A dedicated carbon shelter pole is lighter and won’t flex, but it’s one more item in your pack that does nothing else, so most people I know just use a pole they’re already carrying.
A well-staked pyramid sheds wind from every direction almost as well as a dome tent, with far less fabric and weight. The tradeoff is a single door, less interior volume for the floor area you get, and a pitch that takes a little more practice to get symmetrical and taut.
The Half-Pyramid and Lean-To: Fast and Airy
Stake out only one side of an A-frame and let the rest of the fabric hang open, and you’ve got a lean-to. It’s the fastest pitch to throw up, the most open to airflow, and honestly the most pleasant to cook and hang out under on a clear evening. It is also, unsurprisingly, the least weatherproof option on this list. I only use it when the forecast is genuinely settled, or as a quick sun/dew shelter over a cowboy-camped sleep setup rather than a full night’s storm protection.
A half-pyramid splits the difference: you get one full closed side plus a lower, angled second wall, which blocks more wind than a lean-to while staying faster and lighter than a full pyramid. It’s become my go-to for shoulder-season trips where I want more security than a lean-to but I’m not expecting a real storm.
Dyneema or Silnylon: Which Fabric Fits Your Pitch
Fabric choice matters more for a tarp than almost any other piece of gear, because a tarp’s entire job is to stay taut and shed water while flexing in the wind. - Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF) doesn’t stretch or sag when it gets wet, which means a taut pyramid pitch stays taut through a rainstorm instead of loosening up and flapping at 2 a.m. It’s also noticeably lighter for the same coverage. The tradeoff is cost and a more crinkly, less packable fabric.
- Silnylon and silpoly are cheaper and quieter in wind, but silnylon in particular stretches when saturated, so a bomber pitch at 7 p.m. can be sagging by midnight unless you get up and retension your guylines. Silpoly stretches less than silnylon and is a good middle ground if DCF is out of budget.

Gear Worth Carrying in 2026
A few flat tarps that are actually worth their price tag, based on current specs and what’s held up well for people I trust in the ultralight community:
- Zpacks Flat Tarp (10′ x 8.5′) — around 8.4 oz in 0.55 dyneema, the benchmark most other ultralight tarps get compared against.
- Mountain Laurel Designs Grace Tarp — a catenary-cut DCF tarp around 7.5 oz that holds its shape well in a taut A-frame without extra tensioning.
- Hyperlite Mountain Gear Flat Tarp — a heavier-weave 0.75 dyneema option, closer to 11 oz, that trades a little weight for extra abrasion resistance if you’re hard on gear.
- Hammock Gear Traverse Ground Tarp — a solid 20d silpoly option around 14 oz for anyone easing into tarp camping without a DCF-sized budget.
Whichever one you pick, budget separately for a proper ridgeline (with prusik loops, not just cord), six to eight stakes rated for the wind you’ll actually see, and enough guyline to add extra tie-outs on a mid pitch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a tarp actually colder than a tent?
Not usually, as long as you pitch it low and tight to the ground on the windward side. Most of the “tarps are cold” reputation comes from bad pitches, not the fabric. A properly staked pyramid or A-frame with the low side facing the wind blocks drafts almost as well as a single-wall tent, and you avoid the condensation buildup that plagues fully enclosed shelters on humid nights.
Do I need a bug net with a tarp?
In bug season, yes, unless you enjoy being eaten alive. Most tarp campers pair a flat tarp with a separate bivy or a freestanding bug net (sometimes called a “nest”) that pitches underneath. It adds weight back, but even a tarp-plus-nest combo usually comes in lighter than a comparable double-wall tent.
Can I use my trekking poles instead of buying a dedicated shelter pole?
Yes, and most ultralight hikers do exactly this. Just check your tarp’s specified pole height against your trekking pole’s maximum extension before you buy — some ultralight poles top out a few inches short of what pyramid shelters want for a taut pitch.
How much weight can I actually save going from a tent to a tarp?
Depending on what you’re comparing against, a flat DCF tarp alone typically weighs 7 to 12 ounces versus 20-plus ounces for a comparable single-wall tent, before you add a bug nest. The full tarp-plus-nest system usually still comes out a few ounces lighter than a tent, with the biggest savings coming from ditching the tent poles and using trekking poles you’re already carrying.
