Re-Waterproofing: Why “Just Use DWR Spray” Doesn’t Work Here
This is where most generic guides go wrong, because DWR (durable water repellent) means something different depending on the fabric.
Does Dyneema even need DWR?
Not in the way you’d think. Because the waterproofing on DCF comes from the laminated film, not a coating, the fabric doesn’t lose waterproof performance the way a jacket does. This is the fabric that actually benefits from active reproofing, and it needs a silicone-based product specifically — standard fluoropolymer or wax-based DWR sprays (the ones sold for jackets) won’t bond to a silicone-coated surface and will mostly just sit on top and wash off.
The standard approach among long-distance hikers and cottage gear makers:
- Mix pure silicone sealant (without added fungicide, which can be harmful to apply this way) with a solvent like mineral spirits or paint thinner, roughly to a thin, paintable consistency, or use a pre-made silicone reproofing product.

Packs and rain gear
Packs made from UHMWPE-reinforced fabrics or plain ripstop should be stored empty, clean, and dry, ideally hung rather than crushed under other gear. Rain jackets can go on a hanger like any other technical layer.
